Sustaining the quality of high-impact experiences

The engaged learning taxonomies (formerly RISE taxonomies) are a valuable resource for instructors; they have the potential to assist in improving course design and sustaining the quality of HIP experiences offered. Instructors will also have the opportunity to use these to document course revision and enhancement where appropriate (e.g., instructors can see where they are and envision opportunities for growth).

Capstones

The capstone is a signature, culminating experience that requires students to integrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions acquired during college and apply them in a situation that approximates some aspect of disciplinary practice.

ePortfolios

ePortfolios are a framework for learning, a space for students to collect evidence of, reflect on, articulate, and create new learning over time.

First-Year Seminars

First-year seminars are designed to assist entering students as they form connections with the IU Indianapolis community, including other students, faculty, and advisors in a prospective major.

Internships

An internship is academically-recognized, experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.

Peer Mentoring

Outlines the knowledge, skills, and techniques used during the stages of a successful mentoring relationship from beginning to end.

Project-Based Learning

Project-Based Learning infuses content-rich readings, lectures, and instruction to support students as they learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.

Service-Learning Courses

Service Learning can be defined as a course or competency-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students participate in mutually-identified service activities that benefit the community, and reflect on the activities in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility.
