Maria Sibylla Merian: The First Female Naturalist Painter
Maria Sibylla Merian contributed a lot to entomology during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Looking at Merian’s published collection of engravings in her book Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium one can see the detail of her studies in Surinam. These collections of engravings study the behaviors of insects not previously studied at the time. My project will look further into Merian’s impact on the field of entomology and how she was able to succeed as a female artist.
